With the outbreak of the American Revolution, Abigail Lovell's family is torn apart - while her schoolmaster father is an outspoken loyalist and prominent figurehead in the community, she and her two brothers engage in acts of espionage to undermine the British forces in Boston. Her sickly older brother, James, operates the patriots' spy ring while Abigail acts as a courier, eluding increasingly aggressive British patrols.

Meanwhile, her younger brother, Benjamin, slips out of Boston to fight alongside Abigail's love, Ezra, in the battles at Lexington and Concord. With the help of her friend, Rachel Revere, Abigail smuggles money and supplies out to Benjamin, Ezra, and other revolutionaries. But when a British sergeant is found murdered, Abigail stands accused, and she now must fight to save herself and those she loves. In the tradition of Sally Gunning's Bound and Diana Gabaldon's Echo in the Bone, The Schoolmaster's Daughter is the story of a family torn asunder - and of a determined young woman who must make courageous decisions if she is to aid in liberating her country.

This is about the history of Boston and the eventual Battle of Bunker Hill. The writer has written an intriguing book about people we rarely read about in history books, namely the spies...how they communicated, who they trusted and how sometimes, families were pitted against each other in their beliefs...I come from Boston, so it was such a treat to read about places I knew and could use my imagination given the colorful characters in the book, to understand what the Patriots were willing to do for their country...but this book has more...it has wonderful characters around whom the author has built a story of how this country was founded....how love didn't conquer all, but became meshed into the history of Boston....I couldn't put it down....an excellent book. I loved it.

The Schoolmaster Daughter A Novel of the American Revolution (Audible Audio Edition) John Smolens Elisabeth S Rodgers Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed this book especially as I know little of the details of this period in American history , it made the times come alive . I especially liked getting the geography of Boston straight in my head though I would have liked a map in the book as I had to look up the details separately . A good read .
As described. Thanks!
This is a great story about The American Revolution in a novel form. I love historical novel and this prove one I enjoyed very much, you have male and females heroes. A family divided, the children are fighting to free Boston of the Red Coats, while their parents are loyalist. A love story too. This could be a great movie too.
Wonderful reading fiction into what really happened during the American Revolution. There were some moments of suspense and it was great to have some of our historic characters like Paul Revere come to life.
While I enjoyed the intimate look at Boston before and during the war, I ultimately didn't find this book very believable. While I enjoyed the story's protagonist, she seemed too liberated and twenty-first century than I found credible. She had the freedom to run around a soldier-occupied town at all hours of the day and night and seemed a little too free and easy with her body (as did the other female characters). I just couldn't get into the story with such a jarring representation of my era set into the time of the Revolutionary War.
I cannot rate Smollens' accuracy of the Boston siege of 1774, but it certainly rings true. The daughter, and 2 brothers, are provincials and their parents are loyalists. I imagine there were splits in families. I learned about the hardships of closing the gates of the Boston neck, and halting trade in the Boston harbor. It transported me to a year that was blank in my memory from school. Certainly Lexington and Concord are taught, and Philadelphia and the Continental Congress, but the immediate repercussions in Boston had been hazy until I read this book. A good read for those who enjoy historical fiction and for those who know Boston.
The Schoolmaster's Daughter makes you feel transported into the beginning of the American Revolution. You can imagine how it could seem to go from almost a harmless disagreement among family members to the real tragedy of war. There were several things I had difficulty with, however. One problem was that it could at times get bogged down with historical detail and become boring. Another problem was the relationship between Abigail and the British officer, Samuel. I was very disappointed in how little thought she gave to all of her decisions regarding him. I was also very confused as to who the heck the kid was at the very end.
